To the editor:
I appreciate the concern raised about maintaining fair and balanced coverage of political candidates. Editorial decisions matter, and I appreciate that the Quill acknowledged the appearance created by the front-page layout.
However, there is a difference between questioning an editorial decision and assuming someone’s motives. When I saw the article and photograph about a candidate’s donation to the Ozarks Heritage Festival, I did not view it as the Quill endorsing a candidate. I viewed it as reporting on a community contribution.
I also hope we do not lose sight of the organization at the center of the story. The Ozarks Heritage Festival is a grassroots community event that depends on volunteers, sponsors, and donations to succeed. Reducing a contribution to little more than a political calculation diminishes the work of the many people who dedicate their time and resources to making this festival a success. This should be celebrated.
The suggestion that the donation was made primarily for publicity, or that it created an opportunity unavailable to other candidates, is speculation. Every candidate has the same opportunity to support local organizations and community events. If those actions are newsworthy, they may also receive coverage.
The timing of a donation alone does not prove intent. Otherwise, we risk creating a situation where candidates are discouraged from supporting worthy community organizations during an election year because their generosity will automatically be viewed with suspicion.
I also hope that one person’s letter to the editor does not outweigh years of demonstrated service and involvement in our community. Travis Smith’s commitment to Howell County and the 154th District has been demonstrated through his involvement and support of local organizations and community efforts. That record deserves to be considered alongside speculation about the motives behind a single donation.
We should evaluate candidates based on their character, record, and actions — not assumptions about why they chose to support a worthy cause.
Sincerely,
Deena Opdyke,
West Plains
