A plaque dedicating the Wayside Park Blue Star Memorial, recognizing the service of all U.S. Armed Forces veterans, was unveiled March 27 at the park off of Fifth Street in Mtn. View. The ceremony included the presentation of colors by members of the Mtn. View Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3009 and the playing of taps. The memorial is sponsored by the Mtn. View Garden Club 2017, with cooperation from VFW Post 3009 and the Federated Garden Club of Missouri, and is administered by National Garden Clubs. The marker and flag pole are surrounded by a garden bed with a red, white and blue theme, freshly planted with grape hyacinth, blue-eyed Veronica, two dwarf conifers, Obsession nandina, white creeping phlox, white peonies, Siberian squill, and white giant crocus. The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales arrived Wednesday for viewing at the West Plains Civic Center as part of the weeklong Eclipse West Plains Party in the Path celebration. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. today, they will be featured in a parade at Southern Hills Shopping Center. Friday the draft horses will be available for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the civic center, 110 St. Louis St., then they will make a special appearance as a "One Horse Show" from 5 to 7 p.m. during the .38 Special and Ozark Mountain Daredevils concert Friday evening. The viewing schedule will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the civic center, and the team will make an appearance at 7:30 that evening in the Neon Parade. The parade will move downtown, starting from Kellett Hall at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and West Main Street and ending at the civic center. The Clydesdales will depart Sunday. The team of eight gentle giants, perhaps most recognized as the mascots of the Budweiser beer brand, are each at least 6 feet high at the withers and weigh an average of about 2,000 pounds. Mtn. View residents Jake and Jamie Strand, with daughter Emma, age 4, posed with team member "Slick." Emma was a bit shy in giving her opinion about the Clydesdales but nodded her approval. Mom Jamie said Emma has her own quarter horse, a buckskin named "Wheatie."
Budweiser Clydesdales arrive in West Plains
A hands on experience is needed to learn agricultural operations, and that's just what is promised by the Missouri State University-West Plains agriculture program, which got a recent boost from Dr. Linda Wulff-Risner. Wulff-Risner is a professor of agriculture and the owner of Risner Stables. She made the recent decision to gift the 40 acre facility to the university, to assist in the growth of the agriculture program. Classes have been held there for some time, and plant sciences student Irvin Johnson is shown repairing an electric fence that was damaged by deer running into it.
Chancellor: Impact of ag professor's 40-acre gift to MSU-WP 'inestimable'
The Missouri State University-West Plains campus recently expanded by about 40 acres, thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Linda Wulff-Risner, a professor of agriculture there for about 30 years. The donation of her property, Risner Stables, will allow the university to expand its agriculture program as part of the matching portion of a MoExcels grant applied for through the Missouri Department of Higher Education. more

Felons who have allegedly been found in possession of guns have been recently been charged in Douglas and Shannon counties, in some cases related to complaints of harassment, paranoid behavior or the discharge of weapons near or toward houses. more

As of about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, 56 Glenwood School District patrons had cast their vote, with a seat open on the school board and a ballot initiative to decide on. Chase Johnson ran against current board Vice President Jason Finley for a three-year term. The district is also asking permission to borrow $2 million for capital improvements including roof replacements, exterior improvements, an upgrade to playground equipment, the completion of athletic complex improvements such as new bleachers and a new building for concessions and restrooms, replacement of heating, ventilating and cooling, renovation of restrooms, refinishing the gym floor, remodeling to increase classroom space, and finishing other facilities repairs and improvements as funds are available. Its passage would also raise debt service levy from 0 to $0.3400 per $100 of assessed valuation of real and personal property located within the district. Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's office has announced an extended candidate filing deadline for several state offices, including that of 154th District Representative David Evans of West Plains, who officially withdrew from the race on Monday after announcing his retirement on March 11. more

Birthday Blessings’ annual fundraiser campaign starts Monday
Birthday Blessings, a West Plains-based nonprofit that provides resources to local foster kids in communities across Missouri, is holding its annual Birthday Bash Campaign starting Monday and running through Friday. During this time, an anonymous donor will match funds up to a total of $5,000. The campaign goal this year is to raise $15,000.  more

On Friday morning, West Plains city workers began the temporary closure of some streets near the square in preparation for next weekend's four-day eclipse celebration, Party in the Path. The closures are at the intersections of Cass Avenue at Washington Avenue, and at Dixon Street at Washington Avenue, shown here. City officials say the effort is to increase pedestrian safety between parking lots and storefronts on Washington Avenue. In coordination with Missouri State University-West Plains, another temporary closure is planned for Garfield Avenue between West Main Street and Cass Avenue.

Tabatha R. Adam, 27, Wasola, is charged with second-degree statutory rape and incest, both felonies, after it was alleged she sexually assaulted a teenaged family member, resulting in the birth of a child. more

Dice Run touted as fun way to see the Ozarks
The Dice Run to the Mills, sponsored by Colton’s Steakhouse & Grill, is set for April 7 and is one of the “Party in the Path” events to celebrate the upcoming total solar eclipse in West Plains. There is a week’s worth of activities scheduled for the party, starting on Tuesday with a ribbon cutting and culminating with the eclipse itself on April 8. more
Local author Jill Pietroburgo recently had the unique experience of reading her children's book "Sometimes Grandma Calls Me Jean" at the International School of Turks and Caicos, a British territory located in the Caribbean. Seated next to her on the right is her husband, Phil Pietroburgo. She was inspired to write the book after her mother, Bonnie Sullivant, was diagnosed with dementia in 2019. It deals with a young girl's relationship with her grandmother and how it changes after the grandmother's dementia diagnosis, including explanations about the disease and suggestions for families meant to help children understand it, and other memory disorders. The book continues to receive awards and positive reviews for its handling of the topic and quality writing and illustration.
