Kehoe enlists FEMA's help with damage assessments

Annual Birthday Bash drive starts March 28

Bids are likely to go out this fall for street work in Koshkonong, the recipient of a $408,067 grant for street improvement given by the Missouri Department of Economic Development and administered through the South Central Ozark Council of Governments. The funds will be used to improve Jewell and Grand streets, making them more navigable and safer for students riding the bus to and from school. Kehoe seeks joint damage assessments ahead of federal disaster declaration request
Gov. Mike Kehoe announced on Monday the state has requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency participate in joint preliminary damage assessments for Individual Assistance in 23 counties following the severe storms and deadly tornadoes that devastated Missouri March 14 and 15. The request begins the process of receiving federal disaster assistance. more

Eric Valentin, owner of Señor Valentin, a taco truck and restaurant in the process of moving to the First & Jefferson building, was set up Sunday at Endurance Church in West Plains, where he said more than 100 people were served food and drinks at no cost.  more

The National Weather Service office in Springfield confirmed an EF-3 tornado with peak winds of 140 mph touched down at 8:35 p.m. Friday just south of Bakersfield in Ozark County and tracked northeast toward South Fork in Howell County. more

A school legislative forum was held recently at West Plains High School to give area district administrators and stakeholders a chance to ask questions about an upcoming vote on open enrollment and its potential impact on staffing and transportation costs for districts. Besides West Plains, other district administrators that attended the March 7 meeting included Thayer, Bakersfield, Junction Hill, Richards, Glenwood, Fairview, Willow Springs, Houston, Cabool, Summersville, Plato and Hartville, plus two Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education supervisors. Ozarks Healthcare seeks input from Howell and Oregon county residents to help identify health concerns and shape the future of local healthcare. The public is invited to participate in the 2026-2028 Community Health Needs Assessment by completing a short, confidential survey. more
The Alton FFA is headed to the Heart of the Ozarks Fairgrounds in West Plains today for the steer weigh-in for this summer’s fair, and on Wednesday, will participate in proficiency selection and area officer interviews. FFA Week will kick off Feb. 16 with a service at the Tree of Life church in Alton. On Feb. 17, chapter members will broadcast on K-Kountry 95 radio to talk about FFA, and on Feb. 18, they will host a blood drive at Alton High School and host “Anything But a Cup Day” for fellow students. Feb. 19 is Greenhand Day, where a luncheon will be hosted for Greenhands and officers; students are invited to wear camouflage for Camp Day. A teacher breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon will be served Feb. 20, and students that day are invited to “Drive Anything But a Car” to school. The week will wrap up with FFA Movie Night on Feb. 21 in the ag classroom. The chapter will soon begin career and leadership development event contests to prepare for district and state level competitions.

Becca's Closet of the Ozarks is now operating in Alton, thanks to volunteers dedicated to providing formalwear, accessories and other assistance to teens who want to attend high school dances, but might face financial barriers. It is a local chapter of the national organization Becca's Closet, founded in 2003 by Rebecca Kirtman, a high school freshman from Florida who died in a car crash just months after her first collection of dresses. In the interest of helping local teens have a memorable experience at their high school formal, volunteers and the Alton Methodist Church have opened a chapter of Becca's Closet, a national nonprofit dedicated to assisting students who otherwise might not be able to afford the expenses normally associated with attending dances. more

MoDOT invites public input on Hwy. 142 bridge project over Eleven Point
The Missouri Department of Transportation recently announced it has plans to improve Highway 142 near Billmore in Oregon County, east of Thayer. The project includes replacing the Highway 142 bridge over the Eleven Point River. A section of the road, located from the Eleven Point River to 0.4 miles east of the river, will be raised to mitigate issues with flooding, said MoDOT officials. more
