Uphaus named new principal of WPE starting July 1
Officials with the West Plains R-7 School District have announced Virginia Uphaus will assume the role of West Plains Elementary School principal for the 2024-2025 school year. Effective July 1, 2024, she will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of current Principal Becky Hutchinson.  more
Eslinger named new Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
The State Board of Education announced Tuesday that 33rd District Sen. Karla Eslinger, of Wasola in Ozark County, will assume the role as the state’s next commissioner for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) effective June 1, 2024, after concluding her work in the Missouri Senate during the 2024 legislative session. more

Gov. Mike Parson gave remarks on Tuesday preceding the groundbreaking of a building on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus that will house the university's TJ Swift House A.S.C.E.N.D. Program. A.S.C.E.N.D. stands for Autism Support Can Empower New Directions, and is already in place at MSU-WP, offering support services for students with autism. Other speakers included MSU President Clif Smart, MSU-WP Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, Tracey Hollis of TJ Swift House and 33rd District State Sen. Karla Eslinger, who introduced Parson.

Students enrolled in building trades classes at West Plains High School, including many who travel from other schools to attend classes, have been working on completing a project that will connect the library to an annex located just east of the main building and make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as wall as safer by eliminating one of the outside entrances to the library. The Bear Ambassadors, a new leadership group at the Willow Springs High School, took a moment to thank Jalen Burris, a representative of health and wellness technology organization UNITE's Arrive Alive Tour. Burris ran an impaired-driving simulation Tuesday and Wednesday at the high school. The students are holding pledges signed by participating students to buckle up and put their phones down while driving to reduce the risks of distracted driving, and the likelihood of being injured or killed or harming others as a result. Classes began today for the 2023-2024 school year in West Plains and surrounding rural schools, including Fairview School on K Highway, about 2.5 miles west of West Plains. Kindergartners in Ashley Bray's class, after getting a recess in, got to work writing the letter "A" on their very first school day. Here, Bray gives student Lorenzo some tips on holding his paper in place with one hand and writing with the other. This is the beginning of Bray's 15th year teaching and her ninth as a kindergarten teacher. The school has four kindergarten classrooms this year, with 13 students in Bray's class. Last year, she said, the school had three kindergarten classrooms and 21 students were in Bray's class.

West Plains High School Principal Ryan Smith, starting his first school year in that position, mentioned there are 19 new teachers at the high school alone, only four of whom are first-year teachers. In total, there are about 30 new staff members total at the high school. Later in the meeting, District Superintendent Dr. Wes Davis reminded all the district’s administration is grateful to have hired so many experienced teachers for the upcoming school year, some of whom are returning to district employment having worked for other districts or taken a break from the profession. The first day of school for the 2023-2024 school year in West Plains is Aug. 21.

Area school districts are revving up for a new school year, and that includes filling out paperwork and picking up class schedules. High school schedules were available beginning Tuesday and will also be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the West Plains High School (WPHS) front office, students may pick up their schedules after returning filled out medication forms, a Chromebook care agreement, and may also turn in extras like parking permit applications. R-7 Board meets tonight to prep for upcoming school year

Members of the Missouri State University Board of Governors held a meeting Friday morning in the Magnolia Room at the West Plains Civic Center and heard presentations regarding enrollment projections and student recruitment, details of degree programs and student activities and involvement, and community outreach efforts at both the Springfield and West Plains campuses. MSU-WP Chancellor Dr. Dennis Lancaster, at the podium, gave an overview of recent developments at the West Plains campus, including the addition of a men's baseball program slated to begin in fall of 2024 (see story on right side of page) and grants used to expand the Terry “Bo” Pace Advanced Welding and Fabrication Technology Program. He also introduced a presentation given by members of the West Plains Campus Grizzly eSports Team. Watch the Quill next week for a detailed story about the meeting.
