A West Plains man with active warrants was arrested and released on bond Dec. 19 after a pursuit by officers, the second such pursuit of the same suspect in about a week. The pursuit also appears to have related to action taken by high school and middle school staff and students in response to a potential safety threat after it was reported to school officials by law enforcement.

The December meeting of the West Plains R-7 School Board began with a wrap-up of fall high school student activities, including a visit by many sports and extracurricular activity participants. The students were introduced by Activities Director Dr. Ashley Cooley, and the activities spotlighted included cheerleading; girls tennis, softball, golf, and volleyball; boys soccer; girls and boys cross country; football; speech and debate; and theater.

A 28-year-old man from West Plains is dead of injuries suffered in a traffic crash at 4:40 a.m. Saturday on ZZ Highway eight miles east of West Plains, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Santa Claus from the North Pole applied for the permit last week, providing proof of the healthy herd through a certificate of veterinary inspection signed by licensed veterinarian Dr. Hermey Elf.

![The West Plains Optimist Club conducted its third annual Brent Easley Christmas Basket distribution on Dec. 18 at West Plains Fire Station No. 1 on Kissinger St. This year, said Optimists, the club provided baskets for 24 children and 10 families. Each Christmas basket contained Christmas trees, clothes, toys and food cards. “The support of local businesses and many individuals helps to give to these families,” said project Supervisor Shava Norsworthy. “The business that supports us is Hirsch this year.
