Rainwater is seen pouring into Howell Creek along Bratton Avenue, near Zizzer Stadium, at about 9:30 a.m. Friday after torrential rains that lasted about an hour. Since Friday morning, the West Plains area has seen just over 12 inches of precipitation, according to a Saturday afternoon report from the Howell County Emergency Management Office. About 4 inches of rain total fell Wednesday and Thursday, according to preliminary totals reported by the National Weather Service Office in Springfield, and 2 to 4 inches more rainfall are in the forecast through Sunday morning. The West Plains School District canceled classes Friday, along with weekend extracurricular activities, in anticipation of possible flooding and difficulty getting students bused to and from school, and about an hour before this picture was taken, a direct lightning strike prompted the closure of district offices as well.

Captain D's of West Plains and the Stokes family have been supporters of Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains fundraising efforts for many years, and this year contributed $2,500 for research into treatments and cures for the genetic condition. Cystic fibrosis affects the respiratory and digestive systems of sufferers, resulting in lifelong treatment of symptoms, and the donation was the result of a recent fundraising day at Captain D's, when proceeds of food sales were given to the cause. Captain D’s customers raise $2.5K for cystic fibrosis cause
Recently-retired West Plains Police Chief Stephen Monticelli, center, was recognized at Monday night's city council meeting by Mayor Mike Topliff, left, and City Administrator Sam Anselm. City officials thanked Monticelli for his years of service and presented him with a plaque commemorating them. Monticelli had been police chief since 2018 and his career included 32 years combined with the University Of Missouri and Columbia police departments and six years as police chief in Harrisonburg, Va. At the same meeting Lt. Brian Bunch, who has almost 30 years of experience with the department, was sworn in as interim police chief.

Annual Birthday Bash drive starts March 28

With the conclusion of the 37th annual Cystic Fibrosis Benefit Show, held Saturday and headlined by country music chart-topper Rodney Atkins, the total raised by the coordinating organization, Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains, was $78,809. The proceeds were collected from concert ticket sales, donations, the sale of donated auction items and the giveaways of two handguns, and will go toward supporting research into cure and treatment for cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects respiratory and digestive systems of those who have it. Atkins, who performed the concert in 2019, made a return trip to West Plains in support of cystic fibrosis research, the only repeat performer in the concert’s history, pointed out Cystic Fibrosis of West Plains volunteer Rick Frazier. He said the concert was at near-capacity and he was blown away by the enthusiasm and support that continues to be shown by artists like Atkins, community members who attended the concert and donated auction items, and businesses that contributed financially. "We could only do this in West Plains,” said Frazier. “We couldn't go anywhere else in the country and do what we do here.” Frazier made sure to thank Diane Reed who directed the volunteer singing group "Jessica's Friends" and Matt Crites, who emceed the "Jessica's Friends" performance, continuing a tradition begun by his brothers years ago.
